A shallow, sandy-bottomed bay of impossibly clear water, the Blue Lagoon is the single most photographed spot in the Maltese islands. Go early, go by boat and you will have it almost to yourself.

Why the Blue Lagoon is worth the hype

Fine white sand and shallow water scatter the light, so the sea glows in colours you would not believe without seeing them. The bay is sheltered by the islet of Cominotto, which keeps the water calm for swimmers and kids.

Cruise operators anchor in the bay, so you can step off the boat straight into the water and avoid the shore crowds altogether.

How to beat the crowds

Anchored boats give you the lagoon without the beach queue.

Beyond the lagoon: caves, coves and Crystal Lagoon

Most boat trips continue to the Crystal Lagoon and the sea caves of Comino's west coast. Light pours through the arches and the water takes on a deep cobalt blue.

If you want a quieter swim, ask your skipper about the north-side coves.

Snorkelling and diving

Late May to mid June and September for warm water without the peak crowds.

Insider tips for Blue Lagoon
